We are now an official provider of the Under Armour Performance Mouthwear. If you have not heard about these…they have been proven to increase strength, increase endurance, reduce fatique and speed up reaction time. These can be used for both contact and non-contact sports. With 15 years of research and product development behind them, Under Armour Performance Mouthwear was made available to the public last year. They were recently used by Winter Olympic athletes Lindsey Vonn and Zach Parise. Check out this video. https://pattersondental.com/UnderArmour/video.aspx. I will provide more information on the benefits of these in the weeks to come.

March 9th, 2010Cheryl’s journey
March 8th, 2010Through a program called Give Back a Smile, in conjunction with the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, we will be giving a new smile to our third participant. All participants in the program are victims of domestic violence, who need a new smile to help with their recovery. All treatment will be performed pro-bono for the patient, with the help of dental specialists, dental labs and myself. I will chronicle the progress of Cheryl …(name changed) through the course of her treatment. So far, we have met and discussed her situation. She is missing many teeth, some were knocked out by an abusive partner. She was extremely embarrassed about her condition. Former drug abuse also added to her teeth problems, many of the remaining teeth are badly decayed. At this first meeting, I assured her that we will… help her get her self esteem back…and that there is no reason to be ashamed or embarrassed.
Afraid of the Dentist? Your San Mateo Sedation Dentist Can Help!
January 26th, 2010If you live near San Mateo and experience severe anxiety when undergoing (or even thinking about!) dental treatment,
oral sedation is for you.
Conscious sedation dentistry is available in San Mateo at Michael A. Wong DDS. We have been providing sedation dentistry for several years with excellent outcomes. Whether it is called relaxation dentistry, oral conscious sedation or anxiety-free dentistry, it is completely safe and very popular for our nervous cosmetic and restorative dental clients.
Though it may sound impossible, with oral conscious sedation, dentistry patients can actually relax during dental visits. In addition, healing times for oral surgery and extensive cosmetic dentistry procedures are often shorter if the patient is sedated during treatment.
Sedation dentistry is great for alleviating anxiety for our San Mateo patients, and oral conscious sedation can be effective for treating or working with the following:
- Teeth sensitivity;
- Fear of needles;
- A powerful gag reflex;
- Difficulty controlling body movement;
- Lengthy multi-procedure visits;
- Difficulty becoming numb with traditional injections.
If you need dental work more extensive than a filling; such as a root canal, tooth implant, crown replacement or wisdom tooth extraction; call Dr. Michael A. Wong at (650) 342-9016. When you come to our office at 256 N. San Mateo Drive, Suite 8, in San Mateo, California, we can give you more information about sedation dentistry.
Sedation dentistry is only one of the services we offer at Michael A. Wong DDS, where your smile is our top priority!
Common Myths about San Mateo Family Cosmetic Dentistry
January 19th, 2010Myth #1: Cosmetic Dentistry is Never Necessary for a Healthy Smile
Many so-called San Mateo cosmetic dental procedures are not solely cosmetic. Dental procedures such as tooth replacement are smile-enhancing and, more importantly, prevent many potential problems such as tooth movement, bone loss and difficulty chewing and speaking.
Myth #2: A Dental Bridge is the Only Way to Replace a Missing Tooth
Dental bridges are an San Mateo dental cosmetic procedure that have been used for many years with success. However, dental implants are often a better choice for replacing one or more missing teeth. Dental implants have many advantages for dental patients. They feel like natural teeth, they are stronger, and they are easier to clean than dental bridges. California tooth implants can also be used to anchor dentures or partial dentures.
Myth #3: At-Home Kits are as Effective for San Mateo Tooth Whitening Than a Professional Dental Solution
At Michael A. Wong DDS, we offer our dental patients teeth whitening treatments that provide a much greater level of whiteness than at-home kits. At-home kits may remove surface stains, but they do not provide optimum results and can often lead to uneven coloring.
Myth #4: Dental Bonding is the Best Way to Fix a Chipped Tooth.
Dental bonding can restore the shape of a tooth, but may not be the best long-term solution. If you have a damaged tooth, you may be a good candidate for porcelain veneers. Call us at (650) 342-9016 to set up an appointment so we can determine the best solution for you.
Myth #5: San Mateo Braces are the Only Way to Straighten Teeth
Braces are often part of a transforming dental makeover for our teens and adults alike. However, if your teeth are only slightly crooked, porcelain veneers can reshape your teeth and dramatically improve your smile. And the best thing about veneers? They offer instant results!

How Dental Implants are Changing Dentures in San Mateo
January 10th, 2010If you are one of the many San Mateo denture wearers, you know that they are
not the ideal solution for missing teeth. The problems with dentures include slipping, gum irritation, trouble eating and talking, bone loss, and inability to taste food due to a covered palate. Clearly, dentures do not feel and function like natural teeth.
Good oral hygiene and regular dental checkups can help you avoid the need for dentures later in your life, but other factors can make dental replacements an inevitability.
The good news? Modern dental implant technology is making dentures a thing of the past.
At Michael A. Wong DDS we have information and expertise that can help bring hope to denture wearers through dental implant technology. There are a variety of effective denture/implant tooth configurations.
Call Dr. Michael A. Wong at (650) 342-9016 to book an implant over-denture consultation. We can help you understand your options and can recommend options.
If you currently wear traditional dentures and are not happy with them, implant anchored dentures may dramatically change your life. Your chewing ability will be similar to that of natural teeth and you will be able to eat hard foods again. How about a thick T-bone at your favorite California steakhouse? In addition to being able to enjoy your meal, you will avoid the embarrassment of having your dentures rattle around in your mouth in public.

Sedation Dentistry in San Mateo
December 28th, 2009Picture the following scenario: You are stretched out in a chair at your dentist office holding
a remote as you try to tune into your favorite California radio station. A woman clips a paper bib around your neck. Someone switches on a bright overhead light and you see latex-gloved hands moving toward your open mouth. You close your eyes.
As you read this, does your heart start to race? Are your palms sweaty?
If so, you may be a good candidate for sedation dentistry. Oral sedation benefits nervous dental patients in San Mateo every day. Moderate sedation is used for all types of dental procedures such as root canals, dental implants, and wisdom teeth removal. If you are considering extensive restorative or cosmetic dental work, conscious sedation may allow your San Mateo dentist to complete multiple procedures in a single visit.
Don’t let fear prevent you from getting the dental treatment you need. Schedule a visit with Dr. Michael A. Wong to learn about conscious sedation dentistry.

Multi-Procedure Dental Visits in San Mateo
December 23rd, 2009If you are planning extensive cosmetic dental work, you may be wondering
whether to do it all at once or one procedure at a time over an extended period. Here are some factors to consider:
Cost
In the long run, it is less expensive to do it all at once. At Michael A. Wong DDS in San Mateo, we are able to complete several procedures in one visit. We know that complete smile transformations are a significant investment for most California residents. We would be happy to discuss affordable dentistry financing options. Call us at (650) 342-9016 to schedule a no-pressure consultation.
Time
With the latest materials and cosmetic dental techniques, healing times are shorter than ever before. However, some procedures such as bone grafting, soft tissue grafting, root canals, and dental implants often require a short healing period.
It is easier physically and psychologically to have the fewest possible visits to your San Mateo dentist. You should also consider how your dental visits and necessary healing periods will impact your employment and family life. You will have less down time if you receive several procedures at once.
Aesthetic Results
While we routinely achieve great outcomes when doing a smile makeover in steps, porcelain restorations are best fabricated in the same “batch” for the most precise color matching.
Sedation Dentistry When you come in for a smile analysis, we can discuss oral sedation dentistry. Many cosmetic dental patients benefit from this safe and effective solution for pain and anxiety management. Conscious sedation is especially helpful for procedures such as multiple wisdom teeth extractions and dental implant placement.

Correcting Severe Dental Problems in San Mateo
December 17th, 2009Each separate restorative and cosmetic dentistry procedure performed in San Mateo
can address a specific dental problem. For example, a porcelain veneer can perfect the surface of a tooth that is discolored or slightly misshapen. Dental bonding can fill a small chip in an otherwise healthy tooth.
Some dental problems are more extensive and require a combination of procedures. Crown restoration combined with soft tissue grafts can restore a severely decayed tooth with the root exposed. A bone graft and dental implant can restore a missing tooth in an area where the jaw bone has receded. Orthodontia followed by tooth bleaching totally transforms a smile by straightening and whitening.
What is the difference between tooth bleaching and whitening? Whitening is the term for procedures which remove surface stains to restore the degree of natural lightness. Bleaching goes even further by lightening teeth beyond their natural shade. That’s right: you don’t have to resign yourself to yellow teeth even if they have been that way your whole life! The natural shade of your teeth, by the way, like your skin and hair color, is determined by genetics.
Some California smiles have been gleaming for years by regular whitening. You can maintain the whiteness of your teeth just as you maintain your fitness level. (Of course it is a lot easier to make a quick visit to your San Mateo dentist once a year for whitening touch-ups than sweating in a gym several times a week!)
We live in an age where severe dental problems can be permanently corrected. You don’t have to participate in a TV makeover show in Hollywood to access these premium cosmetic dental procedures. They are available right here in San Mateo. Dr. Michael Wong has the same advanced training and extensive experience as the dentists who keep the smiles of famous actors and musicians camera-ready.
Schedule a consultation at Michael Wong DDS to discover the perfect combination of procedures to achieve your ultimate smile. Our phone number is (650) 342-9016.
